9 Helpful Work From Home Productivity Tips You Need To Know

1. Have a solid morning routine

How you spend your morning sets the tone for the rest of your day. With that being said, having a structured morning routine is crucial in preparing for the day ahead of you.

This is especially important as you are working from home. Sure, sleeping in and rolling out of bed just when you are supposed to be clocking in sounds tempting. But to tell you the truth, this probably won’t set you up for much success.

something to reflect on

What are your morning “non-negotiables?”

MIND

  • brain dump
  • avoiding social media
  • reciting affirmations
  • journaling

BODY

  • breathing exercises
  • moving your body
  • eating a balanced meal
  • staying hydrated

SOUL

  • praying
  • meditating
  • practicing mindfulness
  • listening to music

2. Stay organized

The secret to being productive and staying on track is, dun dun dun….being organized!!

Getting organized does not have to be complicated. It can be as simple as spending 5-10 minutes planning out your schedule or writing down your tasks for the day. What is most important is that you have a clear picture of what the day will look like and know exactly what to expect.

3. Get dressed like you would normally for work

Now don’t get me wrong – I love my comfortable pajamas and I would wear them all day long if I could.

Although there is a bit of a leeway working from home, being in my pajamas all day would probably do me no good.

Despite being at home, dressing up in professional attire reframes your mindset that you are in fact at work and you should be focused just like if you were at the office. Dressing up increases our confidence, which can have a positive impact on our motivation and productivity levels.

4. Have a dedicated work space

Sounds simple enough but it’s important that you give this some thought.

A designated work area can help minimize distractions therefore having a dedicated space for work is really important in staying productive.

5. Prioritize

A way to stay on top of your workload especially when working under tight deadlines is prioritizing tasks that are most urgent.

It can be stressful when there’s a lot on your plate but you’re not exactly sure of where to start – therefore prioritizing the most important tasks is key in managing your workload.

6. Take your breaks

How do you spend your breaks at home?

Being in front of a computer for a good chunk of your day means it’s really important that you take a break to refresh your mind. Use your breaks as ‘me time’ and do things that you like and are good for your mental well-being.

TIP:

Step away from your work area during your breaks. Use this time to stretch, get some water, go for a quick walk, and most importantly breathe. Depending how long your break is, allow your mind and body to relax so that you can re-focus once you come back.

7. Make sure to turn off social media notifications

Probably the biggest culprit of distractions is none other than social media.

Turning your notifications off as you work is key in remaining focused and productive throughout the day.

8. Set goals for the day

Writing down your goals for the day is a great way to provide direction and boost your motivation, and ultimately maximize productivity levels.

I find that setting goals helps me have a clearer picture of what needs to get done for the day and it helps me to stay accountable.

I like to make sure my goals are simple but specific, realistic, and time-bound.

9. Reflect!

One of the things I like to do at the end of each work day is reflecting how the day went. I ask myself questions to gauge if it was a successful or not so successful day.

Engaging in self-reflection is important in creating a better tomorrow and prompting you think about what you can do to achieve just that. It also gives you the opportunity to ponder areas of improvement and how you can move forward.

Reflection Questions:

  • What went well today?
  • What didn’t go well today?
  • How can I make tomorrow better?
  • What were my goal(s)? Did I achieve them today?
  • What can I do differently tomorrow to improve?
  • I’m proud of myself for..
